Assistant Professor
Riccardo Bassoli is a Juniorprofessur (US Assistant Professor, UK Lecturer) at the Deutsche Telekom Chair of Communication Networks and Head of the Quantum Communication Networks Research Group, at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, at Technische Universität Dresden. He is member of the Centre for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-loop (CeTI) , Cluster of Excellence, Dresden. He is also member of the EU Quantum Internet Alliance (QIA) and of the EU flagships for 6G Hexa-X and Hexa-X II. He is principal investigator in the 6G-life research hub of Germany. He got his Ph.D. from 5G Innovation Centre at University of Surrey (UK), in 2016. He was also a Marie Curie ESR at the Instituto de Telecomunicações (Portugal) and visiting researcher at Airbus Defence and Space (Elancourt, France). Between 2016 and 2019, he was postdoctoral researcher at Università di Trento (Italy). He is Senior Member of IEEE and ComSoc. He is also member of the Glue Technologies for Space Systems Technical Panel of the IEEE AESS. He is co-founder and member of the association “SIGN – Scienziati Italiani in Germania Network“.

Although relieved by optical connections, the bottleneck inherent with CRANs can impede future service delivery. Changing to a non-static functional architecture may be better suited for evolving scenarios. Different options have been outlined to split the Base Band Units (BBUs) protocol stack functionality to meet the envisioned demands while minimizing Capital Expenditure (CAPEX). The bandwidth requirement between split functions varies greatly depending on the Functional Split (FS) chosen. The emergence of Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and the possibility of using Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components with specialized software allows for easy repair and maintainability. By deploying BBU functions virtually on COTS nodes, enabling the architecture adjustment on a use-case basis, Operating Expenditure (OPEX) can be further reduced. This work covers the solution of Dynamic Functional Split (DFS), the deployment requirements, and how they affect the envisioned RAN architecture.
