Riccardo Bassoli is a Juniorprofessur (US Assistant Professor, UK Lecturer) at the Deutsche Telekom Chair of Communication Networks and Head of the Quantum Communication Networks Research Group, at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, at Technische Universität Dresden. He is member of the Centre for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-loop (CeTI) , Cluster of Excellence, Dresden. He is also member of the EU Quantum Internet Alliance (QIA) and of the EU flagships for 6G Hexa-X and Hexa-X II. He is principal investigator in the 6G-life research hub of Germany. He got his Ph.D. from 5G Innovation Centre at University of Surrey (UK), in 2016. He was also a Marie Curie ESR at the Instituto de Telecomunicações (Portugal) and visiting researcher at Airbus Defence and Space (Elancourt, France). Between 2016 and 2019, he was postdoctoral researcher at Università di Trento (Italy). He is Senior Member of IEEE and ComSoc. He is also member of the Glue Technologies for Space Systems Technical Panel of the IEEE AESS. He is co-founder and member of the association “SIGN – Scienziati Italiani in Germania Network“.

abstract = {We report a proof-of-principle implementation of the quantum approximate
optimization algorithm (QAOA) for the smallest nontrivial MAX-CUT instance
on an NV-center-based quantum processor operating at room temperature. The
two-qubit register is encoded in the electron spin and the
(^14mathrmN) nuclear spin of a single NV(^-) center. Using a
minimization formulation of MAX-CUT, we implement a single-layer QAOA
ansatz with native entangling and single-qubit control operations. Because
the optical readout of the NV(^-) center is not projective in the
computational basis, we reconstruct computational-basis populations from
averaged fluorescence signals and use them to determine the experimental
QAOA cost landscape by scanning the variational parameters. These results
show that the core elements of QAOA can be realized on this platform and
establish a baseline for future improvements in phase tracking,
coherence-preserving control, and scaling to larger problem sizes.},

abstract = {Quantum memories, which play a critical role in various aspects of quantum networks—such as timing synchronization, fidelity preservation, network performance continuity, and efficient resource management—are not well-suited for practical deployment due to their high cost and complex implementation requirements. For this reason, in our study, we propose a low-cost and easy-to-implement alternative method called soft memory, which does not require any physical quantum memory hardware and is based on a delay-aware routing strategy. Under varying threshold and request time window values, we evaluate two key performance metrics—mean time difference and request success rate—across three types of quantum networks: (i) memoryless quantum networks, (ii) quantum networks equipped with fixed qubit storage time, and (iii) the proposed soft memory architecture. Despite requiring no additional physical hardware, the soft memory approach achieves a request success rate nearly equivalent to that of a quantum memory with 0.15-second storage time, while providing a lower mean time difference.},
