Current protocols implement either heuristics to find solutions that are not guaranteed to be optimal or classic flooding. However, many future use cases, like automotive applications, industrial robotics and multimedia broadcast, will require efficient yet reliable methods. In this work, we use contextual multi-armed bandits together with opportunistic routing (OR) and network coding (NC) to find approximately optimal solutions to the problem of broadcast routing in a distributed fashion. Each router independently learns its own transmission credit, i.e., the number of packets to forward for each innovative packet received, so that the airtime cost, subject to latency constraints, is minimized. Results show that the proposed solutions, particularly the deep learning based one, vastly improve the verall reliability, while performing close to MORE multicast in terms of airtime and to B.A.T.M.A.N. in latency, both being the best candidates in the respective discipline among the tested ones.}, keywords = {}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {inproceedings} }

But wireless communication often faces performance degradation because of its dynamic nature. Using multiple available communication channels, such as WiFi, LTE or 5G New Radio, simultaneously can increase the throughput and reliability, but also increases the dynamics of the system. MPTCP estimates the channel capacity and latency and schedule packets accordingly. However, in conditions with unstable channels MPTCP fails to fully utilize the available capacity. In this paper, we propose the use of Network Coding to efficiently utilize the available resources. We use a channel agnostic, random scheduler to maximize the utilization of all available channels. This prevents underestimations, but also produces a high number of packet loss and duplicate transmissions. We use Network Coding to repair the losses and reduce the overhead of redundant data. Our implementation of this protocol is evaluated against MPTCP in an emulated multipath network with time-varying path properties. The evaluation shows, that the proposed protocol utilizes the channels efficiently even in unstable conditions. In the evaluated dynamic network, the proposed protocol efficiently utilizes 94% of the available capacity, while MPTCP is below 80% due to underestimation. While our protocol is not suitable for general purpose traffic, it provides good performance for large file transfers in unstable wireless multipath networks.}, keywords = {}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {inproceedings} }

In this paper, we present a method to optimize the reliability of a live stream using multiple paths. Compared to other approaches, our method does not rely on feedback to achieve the reliability and thus does not add delay for retransmission attempts. We use the diversity of multiple paths to compensate for the loss of capacity in individual paths. By using an FEC code to generate redundant data the transmission is more robust against fluctuations in capacity of single paths. We present an optimization problem to find a rate allocation for the paths that minimizes the interruptions of the stream. The performance is evaluated in an emulated network based on real-world measurements. The evaluation shows that the theoretical values can be achieved with a small margin. The optimized allocation of rates to the paths increases the reliability by up to 12%.With coding the reliability can be increased by up to 20%, depending on the code rate.}, keywords = {}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {inproceedings} }

The existing LTE-A implementation for content broadcast presents several issues such as indoor coverage, along with low energy and spectral efficiency. Therefore, novel systems that provide efficient massive content delivery and reduced energy consumption are needed. In this paper we present a massive content distribution protocol that combines the benefits of cooperative mobile clouds (CMCs) with Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) through multicast WiFi links. Our main goal is to offload data traffic from the LTE-A link and to reduce the energy consumption at the cooperating UEs. We solve the problem of excessive signaling that oftentimes arises in cooperative approaches by eliminating feedback messages within the CMCs. Instead, we provide a simple but accurate analytic model to correctly configure the number of coded transmissions to be performed within the CMCs. Results show that energy savings of more than 37 percent can be achieved with our protocol when compared to direct content download from the cellular base station. Furthermore, bandwidth utilization at the LTE-A link is sharply reduced.}, keywords = {}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {inproceedings} }

A sliding window version of RLNC is proposed where the coded packets are generated using packets in a window size and are inserted among systematic packets in different paths. The packets are scheduled in the paths in a round robin fashion proportional to the data rates. We use finite encoding and decoding window size and do not rely on feedback for closing the sliding window, unlike the previous work. Our implementation of two paths with LTE and WiFi characteristics shows that the proposed sliding window scheme achieves better latency compared to the block RLNC code. It is also shown that the proposed scheme achieves low latency communication through multiple paths compared to the individual paths for bursty traffic by translating the throughput on both the paths into latency gain.}, keywords = {}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {inproceedings} }

Opportunistic Routing (OpR) is a modern cooperative routing paradigm in broadcast channel networks such as PLC and wireless networks. In combination with Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC), it has been proven to increase the achievable data rate and reliability significantly. The reliability is supported by Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) mechanisms. Traditional ARQs as Stop-And-Wait, Go-Back-N and Selective-Repeat are outperformed by the hybrid ARQs (HARQs). We analyze and compare six HARQs designed especially for protocols with Network Coding (NC). For this purpose, we propose a novel minimalistic evaluation setup. It reveals the disadvantages of each feedback (ARQ) mechanisms allowing an effective and fair comparison. We define performance metrics that indicate the reliability and efficiency and conduct the experiments using different NC parameters and the feedback frequency. We notice that some HARQs allow high reliability (packet loss \< 10 \^{O}\^{e}\AE4 ), while others have just a few percent protocol overhead. For such results, only one feedback per the code block is normally sufficient.}, keywords = {}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {inproceedings} }
