If utilized properly, technologies could support and buffer the relatively more limited neurocognitive functions in the still developing or aging brains. Over the past decade, a new type of digital communication infrastructure, known as the "Tactile Internet (TI)," is emerging in the fields of telecommunication, sensor and actuator technologies and machine learning. A key aim of the TI is to enable humans to experience and interact with remote and virtual environments through digitalized multimodal sensory signals that also include the haptic (tactile and kinesthetic) sense. Besides their applied focus, such technologies may offer new opportunities for the research tapping into mechanisms of digitally embodied perception and cognition as well as how they may differ across age cohorts. However, there are challenges in translating empirical findings and theories about neurocognitive mechanisms of perception and lifespan development into the day-to-day practices of engineering research and technological development. On the one hand, the capacity and efficiency of digital communication are affected by signal transmission noise according to \<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B89"\>Shannon's (1949)\</xref\> Information Theory. On the other hand, neurotransmitters, which have been postulated as means that regulate the signal-to-noise ratio of neural information processing (e.g., \<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B88"\>Servan-Schreiber et al., 1990\</xref\>), decline substantially during aging. Oftentimes, the timely provisioning of access to and the implementation of affordable care are drivers behind tele-healthcare initiatives. Tele-healthcare has already garnered significant momentum in research and implementations in the years preceding the worldwide challenge of 2020, supported by the emerging capabilities of communication networks. The Tactile Internet (TI) with human-in-the-loop is one of those developments, leading to the democratization of skills and expertise that will significantly impact the long-term developments of the provisioning of care. However, significant challenges remain that require today\’s communication networks to adapt to support the ultra-low latency required. The resulting latency challenge necessitates trans-disciplinary research efforts combining psychophysiological as well as technological solutions to achieve one millisecond and below round-trip times. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the benefits enabled by solving this network latency reduction challenge by employing state-of-the-art Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) devices in a testbed, realizing the service differentiation required for the multi-modal human-machine interface. Notably, the ever increasing bandwidth, together with reduced latency in mobile networks, enables a multitude of new use cases for a wide range of industries. These new use cases have typically increased quality requirements for the wireless connection. Accordingly, the Internet architecture needs to keep pace with the recent developments, particularly in light of the holistic approach of the new fifth generation (5G) mobile communication standard. In this study, we shed light on the effects of 5G on the Internet's core, i.e., on the Internet interdomain traffic. The interdomain traffic between distinct autonomous systems (ASs) is exchanged by transit networks as well as through peerings at private network interconnects (PNIs) and public Internet Exchange Points (IXPs). 5G interdomain traffic estimation is especially important for IXPs as these are focal points that aggregate high traffic volumes. We coherently derive twelve 5G use case groups and present an overview of their individual associated 5G use cases. We characterize the communication networking (connection) requirements and the resulting implications of these use cases. Further, we develop and apply a methodology to assess the 5G use cases, so as to rank them in terms of their projected impact on the overall internet traffic growth. Based on this systematic approach, we conclude that the traffic for the use case groups Video in 5G, Health, and Virtual \& Augmented Reality will have the largest impact. We identify a large number of other use case groups, e.g., Live Events, Tactile Internet, and Manufacturing, that will contribute rather small individual fractions to the overall growth of Internet traffic. However, their aggregated contribution to the internet traffic growth will be significant. The incorporation of machine learning through the applications of trained models in these scenarios can pose a computational challenge. The softwarization of networks provides opportunities to incorporate computing into the network, increasing flexibility by distributing workloads through offloading from client and edge nodes over in-network nodes to servers. In this article, we present an example for splitting the inference component of the YOLOv2 trained machine learning model between client, network, and service side processing to reduce the overall service latency. Assuming a client has 20% of the server computational resources, we observe a more than 12-fold reduction of service latency when incorporating our service split compared to on-client processing and and an increase in speed of more than 25% compared to performing everything on the server.
