Based on the recently proposed Glossy network flooding approach, we introduce cooperation between transmitting nodes and formulate a robust multicast beamforming problem with imperfect channel state information (CSI) and analyze its performance. The level of cooperation is dependent on the number of limited feedback bits from receivers to transmitters. First, the impact of the number of limited feedback bits B on energy efficiency is studied, and the programming problem for finding the optimal B is formulated subject to a maximum outage constraint of 5%. Numerical simulations show that there exists an optimal number of feedback bits that maximizes energy efficiency. Second, the effect of the number of cooperating transmitters on energy efficiency is investigated. Results show that an optimum group of cooperating transmit nodes, also known as a transmit coalition, can be formed in order to maximize energy efficiency. While virtual network functions (VNFs) allow greater flexibility compared to hardware based solutions, the VNF abstraction also introduces additional packet processing delays. In this paper, we investigate the practical feasibility of NFV with respect to the tactile Internet latency requirements. We develop, implement, and evaluate Chain bAsed Low latency VNF ImplemeNtation (CALVIN), a low-latency management framework for distributed Service Function Chains (SFCs). CALVIN classifies VNFs into elementary, basic, and advanced VNFs. CALVIN implements elementary and basic VNFs in the kernel space, while advanced VNFs are implemented in the user space. Throughout, CALVIN employs a distributed mapping with one VNF per Virtual Machine (VM) in a MEC system. Moreover, CALVIN avoids the metadata structure processing and batch processing of packets in the conventional Linux networking stack so as to achieve short per-packet latencies. Our rigorous measurements on off-the-shelf conventional networking and computing hardware demonstrate that CALVIN achieves round-trip times from a MEC ingress point via an elementary forwarding VNF and a MEC server to a MEC egress point on the order of 0.32~ms. Our measurements also indicate that MEC network coding and encryption are feasible for small 256 byte packets with an MEC latency budget of .35~ms; whereas, large 1400 byte packets can complete the network coding, but not the encryption within the 0.35~ms.}, keywords = {}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {article} }

To overcome those disruptive changes, future communication systems are substituting specialized hardware with generic hardware boxes and the softwarization paradigm. Furthermore, this approach allows for quick deployment of new services, which was known to cloud service already. In this paper, we will introduce the most prominent candidates for softwarization such as software defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) and explain the importance of those technologies for the upcoming 5G communication system and tactile internet applications realizing novel mobile edge computing, storage, and networking solutions. Specifically, we will discuss use cases of SDN/NFV such as network coding as a service, and ultra-reliable distributed edge caching. We provide in\textendashdepth mathematical analysis of the gains of CORE followed by protocol design and implementation details needed for CORE\^{O}\c{C}\"{O}s successful deployment in practice. Finally, we provide extensive measurements with off\textendashthe\textendashshelf wireless nodes under various channel and system conditions comparing CORE to other state\textendashof\textendashthe\textendashart approaches, namely, forwarding (no coding) and COPE (inter\textendashsession network coding). These measurements support our theoretical findings, showing that CORE not only outperforms COPE and forwarding in general, but that order of magnitude gains are possible for cases with high packet losses. Specifically, CORE has a throughput gain of more than 10x over a COPE\textendashlike scheme and 7x over forwarding when the error ratio is 50 % on all links.
