Assistant Professor
Giang T. Nguyen has been, since July 2021, an Assistant Professor and the Head of the Haptic Communication Systems research group. He is a principal investigator in interdisciplinary research projects, such as CeTI (Center of Excellence for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop) and 6G-life. Previously, he co-founded and worked at Wandelbots, a robotic startup, programming industrial robots via demonstration. Between 2016 and 2019, Giang Nguyen was a postdoc researcher at the Deutsche Telekom Chair of Communication Networks (ComNets), leading the NFV/SDN research group. Simultaneously, he is working on the Highly Adaptive Energy-Efficient Computing (HAEC) path of cfaed, coordinating the Architecture group of projects.
He received his Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications at Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST, Vietnam) in 2001, Master’s degree also in Telecommunications at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT, Thailand) in 2005. He was a Ph.D. student of Professor Thorsten Strufe at the Peer-to-Peer Networks group (TU Darmstadt, Germany) and then the Chair for Privacy and Data Security (TU Dresden, Germany). In March 2016, he successfully defended his dissertation titled “Contributions to the resilience of Peer-to-Peer video streaming against Denial-of-Service attacks.”

With NFV, running network functions on general-purpose hardware is supposed to lower network latency due to reduced propagation delay. The trade-off, however, is in impaired reliability and increased processing latency, which could negatively affect Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE). We investigate the trade-off via a comprehensive measurement study exploiting a high-precision measurement method on a carrier-grade Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series switch, which provides enhanced computing capability via lightweight containerization. Baseline results on packet forwarding latency confirm that software-based forwarding is inferior to the hardware pendant. Subsequently, we deploy a more realistic application with an example for network coding and introduce a new metric, re-coding opportunities. Although relieved by optical connections, the bottleneck inherent with CRANs can impede future service delivery. Changing to a non-static functional architecture may be better suited for evolving scenarios. Different options have been outlined to split the Base Band Units (BBUs) protocol stack functionality to meet the envisioned demands while minimizing Capital Expenditure (CAPEX). The bandwidth requirement between split functions varies greatly depending on the Functional Split (FS) chosen. The emergence of Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and the possibility of using Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components with specialized software allows for easy repair and maintainability. By deploying BBU functions virtually on COTS nodes, enabling the architecture adjustment on a use-case basis, Operating Expenditure (OPEX) can be further reduced. As visual data must travel through networks to reach the edge cloud, it is crucial to minimize transferred data while maintaining reliable and accurate localization and map generation. State-of-the-art systems perform pre-analysis of SLAM modules on the mobile device, causing high processing delays and limiting functionality. To minimise both throughput demand and latency, we are investigating video compression techniques in Analyze-Then-Compress (ATC) transmission systems. Evaluations employing the widely used H.264 demonstrate that CTA achieves lower throughputs than its counterparts, as well as significantly reduced processing delays and transmission latencies. To monitor and connect the robots, reliable and low latency communication is necessary. In this work, we conduct packet-based active measurements to evaluate the performance of a state-of-the-art 5G standalone system in a production environment. The focus is on whether 5G connections can meet the requirements specified by 3GPP in terms of delay and reliability. The results indicate that without cross-traffic, the requirement of a delay of less than 10 ms for 99.9 % of the packets can be met for the remote control and fleet management of mobile robots. However, as soon as cross-traffic is injected, especially in the uplink, the upper percentiles of the delay increase significantly, thus failing to hold the reliability requirements.}, keywords = {}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {inproceedings} }

Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) is intended to enable deterministic communication over inexpensive Ethernet networks. Standardized by the IEEE TSN working group, TSN enables precise control of time synchronization, traffic shaping, reliability enhancements, and network administration to answer the demands of industrial control applications. Subsequently, there is a significant need to enable turnkey research and implementation efforts. However, a current lack of open-sourced testbed implementations to investigate and study the behavior of TSN network devices limits verification to simulation and theoretical models. We introduce a publicly available, flexible, and open-sourced measurement testbed for evaluating TSN in the context of industrial automation applications to address the need to perform real-world measurements. In this contribution, we describe our testbed combining Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware and existing open-source tools as a platform for in-depth evaluation of TSN devices. Providing detailed TSN backgrounds, we describe an in-depth performance analysis for our implementation.
